Fire extinguishers? - The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005?

The new Fire Safety Order, effective from 1st of October 2006, applies to all workplace premises in England and Wales and requires that:

The Responsible person at any premise must have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment carried out by a competent person (documented if you employ 5 or more people).

Appropriate risk based fire training must also be carried out on a regular basis, again by a competent person.

The Fire Safety Order places great emphasis on business continuity, containing and preventing the spread of small fires.

The provision of fire extinguishers is clearly recognised as a major provision in doing this, as well as staff training in the safe use of fire extinguishers.

Fire categories and suitable types of fire extinguishers to use

Class A:

SOLIDS such as paper, wood, plastic and textiles.
WATER, FOAM, ABC DRY POWDER

Class B:

FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS such as paraffin, petrol and paints.
FOAM, CO2, ABC DRY POWDER

Class C:

FLAMMABLE GASES such as propane, butane and methane.
ABC DRY POWDER(isolate gas supply)

Class D:

METALS such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium.
SPECIAL CLASS D DRY POWDER

Class E:

Fires involving ELECTRICAL APPARATUS.
CO2, ABC DRY POWDER

Class F:

Cooking OIL & DEEP FAT FRYERS.
WET CHEMICAL

Fire extinguisher colour Coding

Prior to 1st Jan 1997, the code of practice for fire extinguishers in the UK was BS 5423, which advised the colour coding of extinguishers as follows: New fire extinguishers should conform to BS EN 3, which requires that the entire body of the extinguisher be coloured red. A zone of colour of up to 5% of the external area can be used to identify the contents using the old colour coding shown above.
